Here in North Lakes and across surrounding areas like Mango Hill, Griffin, and Burpengary, unpredictable weather and changing pool conditions often lead customers to ask, “Should I drain my pool?” The short answer is: only when it’s necessary, and never without professional advice.

At Atlantis Pools, we see too many well-meaning pool owners make risky decisions when it comes to water removal—particularly for those with cartridge filter systems.

“Draining your pool is not something to take lightly,” says Kylie Rojahn, owner of Atlantis Pools. “Whether you’re dealing with high water after rain or water quality issues, there are right and wrong ways to manage water levels—especially if your system uses a cartridge filter.”

When Might You Need to Lower Pool Water?

There are a few valid scenarios where lowering your pool’s water level is recommended:

✅ High Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

Over time, minerals, salts, and organic matter can build up in your pool water. If TDS levels get too high, your pool technician may suggest a partial drain and top-up with fresh water.

✅ Preparing for Heavy Rain or Storms

If a tropical storm or heavy rainfall is on the radar, slightly lowering your pool water can help prevent overflow and flooding of the surrounding area.

✅ For Repairs or Resurfacing

Some repairs or resurfacing projects require the pool to be drained—but this should always be handled by a professional to prevent damage.

Important:Never drain a pool below the skimmer line. Doing so can cause the pump to run dry, leading to severe and costly damage.

How to Lower Water in Pools with a Cartridge Filter

If your pool uses a cartridge filter system, there are a couple of safe ways to reduce the water level. Just follow these instructions based on your setup.

🛠 Option 1: Using the Drain Plug

  1. Turn off the pump.

  2. Locate the drain plug at the back of the filter and unscrew it.

  3. Turn the pump back on. Water will flow out of the open plug.

  4. Once the water has dropped to the desired level, turn the pump off again.

  5. Replace and secure the drain plug.

This is a simple and effective method for small to moderate water level adjustments.

🛠 Option 2: Using the Drain Valve (If Available)

Some systems include a valve between the pump and the filter, which allows for water diversion:

  1. Turn off the pump.

  2. Rotate the valve to block water flow to the filter.

  3. Turn the pump on. Water will exit through the open valve or waste line.

  4. When the water level is right, turn the pump off and return the valve to its normal position.

  5. Resume normal pump operation.

If you’re unsure whether your system has this setup, our team at Atlantis Pools can help you identify it.

Important Notes for Cartridge Filter Owners

  • DO NOT drain the pool if it requires vacuuming to waste after using a flocculant.
Cartridge filters aren’t designed for this task unless a dedicated bypass or diversion is installed.

  • Avoid using flocculants unless recommended by a professional.
These products can clog cartridge elements, leading to performance issues.

  • Check your water balance after lowering.
Removing water can change chlorine, pH, and stabiliser levels. We recommend bringing in a sample for free in-store testing.
