Testing your pool water regularly is essential to keeping it clean, safe, and ready to enjoy. But did you know that the type of container you use to collect your water sample can directly impact the accuracy of your results?
At Atlantis Pools, based in North Lakes and servicing surrounding areas like Rothwell, Kallangur, and Deception Bay, we see it all—from milk bottles to takeaway containers being used for water testing. While the effort is appreciated, these household items simply aren’t suitable or fit for purpose for pool water testing and can lead to unreliable results.
“To get the most accurate picture of your pool water chemistry, we always recommend using a proper sample container,” says Kylie Rojahn, owner of Atlantis Pools. “It’s not just about convenience—it’s about ensuring your family swims in healthybackyard swimming pool water.”
Why Proper Sampling Matters
When you bring your water in for professional testing, we’re looking at a snapshot of your pool’s chemistry at that moment in time. If the sample is stored incorrectly—or if it’s been sitting in the wrong type of container—it could already be affected by changes in temperature, exposure to air, or contamination from the container itself.
That’s why we strongly advise bringing your sample to the store within 20 minutes of collection and always in an approved sample bottle.
What Can Go Wrong with the Wrong Container?
-
Food containers or bottles may be contaminated with oils, sugars, or residue that distort test results.
-
Improper lids or open containers can expose water to air, impacting chlorine and pH levels.
-
Plastic degradation from some household containers may leach chemicals into the sample.
“In-store, we’ll need to dispose of any samples brought in using food or drink containers,” Kylie explains. “It’s not about being picky—it’s about protecting your pool and your health.”
How to Take a Proper Pool Water Sample
Here’s a simple guide for collecting a water sample the right way:
-
Use an approved water sample bottle with a secure cap – available from Atlantis Pools.
-
Hold the bottle upside down (opening facing the pool floor).
-
Submerge it elbow-deep, then turn it upright to collect the water.
-
Avoid collecting water near return jets or skimmers, as this can give an inaccurate reading.
-
Bring it to the pool shop within 20 minutes of sampling.
-
Do not use food or drink containers—these will be discarded immediately.
Why Regular Testing Is Non-Negotiable
Water clarity alone doesn’t reveal what’s really happening in your pool. Chlorine and pH levels are your frontline defence against Recreational Water Illnesses (RWIs)—these include everything from skin irritations to more serious stomach and respiratory bugs caused by bacteria or parasites.
“Most people worry about sunburn or diving injuries when swimming, but RWIs are just as important to consider,” says Kylie. “Consistently balanced water chemistry is the key to a healthy swim.
FACT – there are 5 types of unidentified bacteria in one downfall of rain from the sky. Hence, the warning, do not drink water straight from the sky.”
The Role of Chlorine
Chlorine is your main germ-killer—but it doesn’t work alone. Factors like sunlight, debris, and even sweat and sunscreen from swimmers can reduce chlorine’s effectiveness.
That’s why levels must be tested and adjusted routinely, especially during the busy summer months when your pool sees the most activity.
The Role of pH
Chlorine’s ability to disinfect is directly affected by your pool’s pH level. If pH is too high or too low, chlorine simply can’t do its job properly.
“Your body has a natural pH between 7.2 and 7.4,” Kylie explains. “That’s also the ideal range for pool water. When your pool sits in this zone, chlorine works better, and swimmers are more comfortable.”
Stop Problems Before They Start
Maintaining a healthy pool doesn’t have to be hard—it just takes consistency, and a little help from the pros. By using the right container, collecting your sample properly, and testing regularly, you’re staying ahead of issues like algae, cloudy water, or unwanted bacteria.
“We’re always here to help our local community get the most out of their pools,” says Kylie. “Whether you’re in North Lakes, Griffin, or Scarborough, we make water testing easy and accurate.”
